forever learning

I cannot tell you how much I have learned in the last few weeks. We’ve been on a five week trip on the eastern seaboard. But I can tell you a little. Cramped in small spaces, car and hotel, for hours a day gives ample opportunity to practice virtue and foster vice. We have all done both. But, I think, in the end, the practice of virtue, patience and consideration...have won out at the end of the day.
I have learned how fiercely my sons love each other by they way they have played, talked, defended one another when they have only had each other for this time. I have learned how deeply they love us. And express their gratitude regularly. When one is sour and is chastised for his behaviour, the others have done their best to see that we understand the predicament fully. They have practiced compassion for each other.
There have been so many moments when one or the other has said to us, "Thank you so much for doing all this for us. This is the trip of a lifetime." They are touched by history, by sacrifice, death, wisdom and longsuffering. We have all watched out for one another. That we feel well and are kept safe. They have watched out for their baby sister vigilantly. "Hold her hand mom. It's a busy street." "Rosebud, never ride the elevator alone. Don't ever push the button unless one of us is with you." What a comfort this must be to a small person who has six "ones of us" to watch out for her well being.
I think we have walked about a hundred miles in the last four weeks. I feel good. I am ready for home. I am so grateful for what I have been given, and for what others have given for me. We are all changed. I thank God for all that He has given us. Pray for us for a safe return home.
