Not getting along takes up a lot of time.
In order to get along better, we can employ some practical tools.
Practice
Order
Assuming the best of others
Time for self reflection
Practice requires work. It’s actually our job to establish the environment in our homes conducive to getting along.
Order allows us to be kinder. Something as simple as being able to find our stuff helps us avoid problems. Managing our environment simplifies our life and makes more space in our brains to be kind.
Assuming the best of others aids getting along because it puts us in a spirit of empathy. We are constantly “converting” and showing our children the way of conversion…we convert someone most effectively by “taking them by the hand and guiding them.” (St. Thomas Aquinas). This is discipleship at its finest.
Time for self reflection. Planned down time for yourself and also for your family as a whole is vital. We need opportunities to gain perspective, to have deep conversations and to be together without getting all the things done.
